In this world of rising prices, viruses, stressful social media, single use plastics and digital tech, it is almost impossible to imagine how we can overcome the problems facing us.

When I was young, we read books, used hand tools, cycled to work, pushed lawn mowers, shopped in the high street, used reusable shopping bags and paid with good, honest cash.

The cure to modern day problems is not to be found in more and more power hungry tech, but in a return to the tried and trusted ways of our forebears.

Very few of which used electricity. I doubt that anyone will ever lie on their death bed wishing they had spent more of their life online !

HERALD OF THE FAIR

To help celebrate the 50th Great Dorset Steam Fair, all the songs related to the fair appear together on one CD. It is important to remember that many of these comic songs and witty parodies were written not for a big stage show, but to be sung round the camp fire at night after a day’s steaming. A Tarpaulin would be strung up between a couple of road locomotives, Tilley Lamps would be lit and Alcohol consumed till the early hours. Only years later, would these gatherings evolve into Dr. Busker’s shows in the Real Ale Tent. The introduction comes from an early VHS video with Michael Oliver describing Dr. Busker, (Thank you to Jonathan Eckardt of Jeck Films). ‘Dorset fair 50’ is a song for the 50th show highlighting, comically, various aspects of the fair. ‘Stourpaine’ was written at the original site Stourpaine Bushes in 1984 and sung also at the Everly Hills rallies. ‘Engines bright and beautiful’ was written in 1988 to celebrate the show moving to its current site. With ‘Southdown’ appearing a year later for the 21st. By 1992 the fair was huge and an 8 day show was announced, (as a rehearsal for the 25th the following year). It was reasoned that it couldn’t possibly rain for all 8 days. It did!

The song ‘Dorset Flag’ was born of the frustration felt by everyone struggling in the mud. The version on this CD is ‘radio friendly’ with the line; “it’s fog in raining” amongst the slight alterations to the usual more bawdy version. Steam Fair FM having become an integral part of the fair. In 1993 Chris Edmonds commissioned the song ‘Glory glory Tarrant Hinton’ for his ‘Steam Fair Choir’ to sing with the Gavioli organ of Richard and Anne Preston, to celebrate the 25th show. The legendary engineman Steve Neville, who was gallimaufrous, felt that the Olde English word ‘mumping’ , (meaning to cadge), had fallen into disuse and should be re-instated, so ‘Mumping the Cider’ was written with this in mind. More steam fair songs inevitably appeared as the years progressed including ‘The Day of the Display’ and ‘Way to Dorset’. Then came the 40th show in 2008 when ‘Stourpaine Gatherin’’ was written to remind us all how far the show has come. This CD includes the ‘Fairground Jig’, where an early recording is blended with Dr. Buskers modern accordion. There are songs of rally-field life including the rally caterers, health and safety and the toilets. There is also a tribute to‘Old Glory Magazine’. Which in Busker’s opinion is the essential link binding the preservation movement together. The CD concludes with the title track ‘Herald of the Fair’ an anthem befitting this event which many preservationists regard as ‘The Greatest Show of its kind, on Planet Earth!’

THE EUNUCHS' BALL

Dr. Busker brings together a selection of Bawdy songs, witty parodies and Steam Rally Ballads in the style of the early chaotic Victorian music hall.
Picture the scene, the Steam Rally beer tent. Everybody is partaking of libation.
On the wooden stage Dr. Busker is joined by some of his friends, playing makeshift instruments.
The lights are low, the songs are Bawdy and Raucous. It is almost impossible to tell where the entertainment ends and the audience begins.
But this is how it has always been.
Sometimes it is wonderful to get away from the pressures of modern life, if only for a few hours.

THE BOOZE UP

Dr Busker takes us back to the heyday of the pub pianist.
The smoky pubs were populated with men who drank strong ale and women of doubtful reputation
(and sometimes dubious personal hygiene).
There was no ‘juke box’ pumping out it’s sterile pop music. Live music was king, and the piano was the hub of every good session.
The humour was coarse and often vulgar, but some of the lock-ins, were legendary.
And we all had sore heads in the morning.

OLD KING COAL

Take a journey with Dr Busker. After picking up a King size lump of coal from the Booze and Bus club it’s off to the local Steam Rally, where a win on the Tombola secures a nice bottle of Whisky. Then it’s off to see the Rural Crafts and the Beer Tent for a Pint of Real Ale. With one eye on the Weather we head out to the Engine Line where there are lots of interesting Traction Engines on display including the famous ‘Burrell’s’ of Thetford. Then along with a couple of Irish friends, we take in the entertainment, from old Victorian Music Hall acts to Choral Singing including an old Yorkshire favourite. Feeling a bit ‘Peckish’ we enjoy a Hot Curry and take our seats for the Dr Busker show. After much merriment and a tribute to absent friends, the day concludes with a spectacular fly past by a Lancaster Bomber.
